In a small area Basel has one of the highest densities of museums in Europe — from the Kunstmuseum and the Fondation Beyeler to the Tinguely. Plus theatres, galleries, arthouse cinemas and cultural centres.
Basel has the highest density of museums in Switzerland. Around 40 institutions for 180,000 inhabitants — from the Kunstmuseum with the world’s oldest public art collection, through the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, to specialist houses such as the paper museum or the toy world museum. Add to that theatres, concert halls and public art across the city.
The map brings together over 300 cultural venues and can be filtered by type and neighbourhood. Two notes for newcomers: many museums close on Mondays, and with the Basel Card or the Museums-Pass-Musées you also get across the border — the pass is valid throughout the region, including Alsace and southern Baden.
